I have done quite a bit of GUI design in both Pv-Wave and in IDL. In
my opinion, the interface to the Motif library is a little better in
Pv-Wave than in IDL. I must make the statement that I have not seen
the latest greatest IDL version, but I like Pv-Wave a little better.
Their widgets seem a little more polished and at a little higher level
than IDL's. Part of this I think stems from IDL's original philosophy
towards the widgets. It appears that when they first implemented the
interface to the Motif widget set, they were merely trying to provide a
little higher interface than writing your own C code. However, when
Pv-Wave first came out with their widgets, they were looking at the
user being able to easily put together very complex applications.
However, with a little bit of work, both systems can be made to do the
exact same things.
