The final 10.3 isn't available until October 24th at 8 pm, Cupertino time, I
suppose. (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/031008/sfw058_1.html)

IDL has run on a G5 and appears to work just as well as on a G4 with the
same OS X 10.2 and Apple X11 Beta 3 software. While this isn't a complete
test, I don't think that there is any reason to avoid using IDL on a G5.
I'm sure Apple has paid a lot of attention to the detail of making sure
current apps run on the G5.

If you put OS X 10.2 with Apple X11 Beta 3 on your G5, you may encounter
some graphics problems that are caused primarily by problems in the beta X11
code. This code *is* beta and RSI has been working with Apple pretty
closely to get these problems fixed for X11 in 10.3. As mentioned in the
press release, Apple includes the X11 support in 10.3.

Unless you are just dying to use the G5, it might be better to wait for
10.3, rather than going through two OS installs and customizations. The X11
on 10.3 is going to be a better experience than any of the Beta releases on
10.2.
