IDL versus MATLAB [message #14970] Thu, 08 April 1999 00:00 Go to next message

Hi,

I am currently using IDL v5.2 but I need to perform some extensive
speech signal processing in the form of digital filtering (butterworth
etc). Now, IDL doesn't contain any in-built functionality for this in
the way that MATLAB does.

The possible solutions are:

1. Call the MATLAB signal processing functions from IDL (using the
IDL2MAT software at http://hendrix.ei.dtu.dk/software/atlant/ ).
2. Convert to MATLAB (I have the time, but cant afford the costs)
3.Find some existing IDL code that performs these functions already.

I prefer option 2, but 3 would be OK if the code was tested. It would be
even better if RS were to incorporate some DSP functionality into the
product at their next release.

Has anyone else had the same frustrations and do you have any
suggestions?

Regards,

Mark

For what it's worth, I'm beginning to like Matlab
a lot. :-)

*Very* elegant math syntax. Does math things VERY
well, including (probably) multivariate stats.
But it's not going to beat IDL for programming
or graphics display anytime soon, I don't think. :-)

Cheers,

David
