I've been using the "in a Nutshell" page but I would prefer a reference
card style doc. I was thinking of doing it in latex - I don't really know
much about TexInfo, but I'd think it would be too hard to get the precise
formatting needed for a ref card from TexInfo. Would you agree?

No handy reference card.... I'd love to have one, though, if you're
volunteering. There is a quick reference in the manual: look for "IDLWAVE
in a Nutshell". It's far from complete, and doesn't have the nice, dense
formatting those you pointed to do. Why don't you take a crack starting
with the Nutshell, and I'll suggest what else to add (variables, etc.).
Would this be a TexInfo source?
Thanks,

Maybe you are thinking about the IDL Quick Guide, which started
at at two pages and is now (oh, I don't know) 30+ pages.
Cheers,
David
P.S. Let's just say *I* wouldn't want to be starting
out with IDL. I'd probably go with Matlab. :-)

The Emacs reference card is done in TeX - the source is available
from the same website as the pdf and ps versions of the refcard.
http://www.refcards.com/download/emacs-refcard.tex
The easiest way to create a nice-looking refcard for IDLWAVE (great
idea!) will be to modify this TeX file. It also allows for easy
creation of 1,2, and 3 column versions of the reference card.
