On the whole there is really very little difference in functionality.
Since PVWAVE is an offshoot of IDL most code should be compatible.
Features added since the offshoot (like widgets) will be entirely
different. Depending upon your applications migration of existing
code may be either trivial or a real pain.
When we looked at this we thought that the value of existing code and
the cost of migration far out weighed and cost differences between IDL
and PVWAVE (this included the fact that we have/had a site license
for PVWAVE and it was essentially free to us!). We stuck with IDL.
