I use both Window and Window NT version of IDL. The Window version of IDL
will take the first 8 characters of a fill name longer than 8.3. However,
the WINDOW NT will not do this. It attempts to find the 8.3 truncated
name which maybe bigger than 8.3.

Yes this is a bummer! Especially when all our sateliite data files have
file names bigger than 8.3. We even have people sticking with Windows 3.5
on the NT machines so they can use larger file names. The performance is
slow, but they prefer this than spending the time renaming files to 8.3.
Some researchers are even going back to using FORTRAN on the NT machine.
