Hi Folks

Well did you try HEG?
(http://hdfeos.gsfc.nasa.gov/hdfeos/details.cfm?swID=59) converts hdf to
geotiffs or binaries
It's freeware and the command line tool is just great you can even
stitch datsets together...and HEGt supports also ASTER data...

After using HEG on more than 1500 TERRA - MODIS datasets I can assure
you, that the metadata was parsed correctly on this datasets...
