Can anyone give me some hints to accomplish
robust automatic image registration?

I have tried correl_optimize and it doesnt seem to work
very well for my images, and doesnt work at all,
unless I filter out all negative values.

I have read a tiny bit about affine.pro and affine_solve.pro,
but am uncertain if I am using them correctly-the results I got were nonsense.

Is there another resource I should be consulting, and/or
newer more robust IDL routines to do this?
