As first announced in the Platform Support FAQ in our January Developments
newsletter, RSI is discontinuing IDL support for Tru64 UNIX starting with
the release of IDL 6.1, due out this summer. Although Alpha/Tru64 is an
excellent platform, its vendor long ago discontinued both hardware and
operating system development. We have postponed this decision for some time,
but the time now seems right. Our user numbers on this platform are
dwindling, and the aging operating system platform is becoming an issue for
ongoing development.
Many of you may remember that we made an attempt to drop this platform two
years ago when Compaq/HP announced the cancellation. In hopes of handling
the situation better now than we did then, we are taking the following
steps: a Tru64 version of IDL will no longer be included on the IDL CD, and
will not be officially supported. However, we will build and test on this
platform for IDL 6.1 so that we can provide those IDL users who have current
maintenance contracts with a working version to see them through their
transition to another supported platform. We will be happy to provide you
with a copy of IDL 6.1 for Tru64 Unix if you request it after IDL 6.1 ships.
And of course, your older existing versions of IDL will continue to work.
This should be sufficient to allow you to extract the maximum remaining life
from your existing Alpha systems.
The supported platforms for IDL 6.1 are listed on the platform support FAQ
on our Web site:
http://www.rsinc.com/services/techtip.asp?ttid=3635
If there is anything we can do to help you transition to another platform,
please don't hesitate to contact RSI. Thank you for your continued support
of IDL!
