To be clear, I (or anyone) cannot do anything to the newsgroup.
Each reader would filter for themselves.
I am using Outlook Express, which has some meager filtering available.
Under Message/Create Rule from Message/
One could get a better newsreader (for example I probably will
switch to Mozilla for newsgroups, I already use it for email and webbrowsing.)
My only suggestion would be the creation of some rules, which could
work since this newsgroup is so tightly knit. But I'm starting to think it
is probably a bad idea to try to get the IDL community to agree on rules,
let alone have everybody follow it.
Offhand I don't see how to filter crossposted messages in outlook express or in
Mozilla. I'll check out free agent and some others to see if that is possible.

I second this, our news server here at UW does a fairly good job (3
questionable messages in the past 5 days) but at home, the comcast news
server is considerably worse. I think ISP's like comcast and quest
deliberately fail to provide filtering on their "free" news servers in order
to sell their premium services.
Does your news reader allow you to define rules for hiding/deleting
messages?

How about filtering out any email that doesn't mention IDL? ... Well,
that wouldn't work either... not sure what could be done.

So, nevermind then. I had assumed the spam was a universal problem.
I see 8 spam messages in the last 5 days (i.e a couple a day).
I'm using qwest's newsserver, which seems to do absolutely nothing.
I will now crawl back under my rock.
