Thank you for all the help. I think the answer turns out to be a
combination of everything.

The triangulation error was casued by locations whos coordinates were to
similar (probably near the pole). The solution, in this case, was to not
contour the data in a 1 degree latitude X 1 degree longitude grid, but a 2
degree latitude X 2 degree longitude grid.
