Thanks all. It seems the trick is to use the IDL installation CD
rather than the ENVI 4.0 download package. Both packages contain IDL
but the latter seems to be very unstable on my G5. I don't know how
this will affect envi, but I don't really use it much anyways...

I second the assertion that fsc_surface can work perfectly on Mac OS X
10.3.3 (Thanks, David!) I'd be happy to share X11 configuration
information if you can't get your system to work.

Nope. :-) fsc_surface works just fine for me - OS X 10.3.3 and Apple's
X11 on a PowerBook G4.

I've been using OS X 10.3.3 and Apple's X11 with XVOLUME with no
problems on both my Powerbook and my G4. I can drag and rotate with the
left button (Microsoft 2-button mouse). I have "emulate three button
mouse" checked in X11 preferences. There isn't really anything else to
configure in X11.
It must be fsc_surface. ;-)
