A contractor is likely more than a typical thesis budget would allow.
I'd say something like US$100/hr is probably in the ballpark. The more
expertice required, the higher the cost.
And it would take a handful of hours just to look at the problem.

Another approach would be to present your problem here (if it is
an IDL problem) and maybe a lurker could help.
I'm sure lots of people would try to help, especially if it is an
academic/thesis related venture.

If it's simple, sometimes just mentioning what the problem
is works amazingly well. :-)
