I've been searching for an archive to download slightly older versions
of IDL, but having no luck (don't know if I'm passing the wrong
parameters as the search string or what).

Basically, we have a license server for v5.5, but don't have any
install software for Windows (generally we always use UNIX/Linux). At
the rsinc.com website, I've only been able to download version 6,
which of course refuses to work. I haven't been able to find any
"back issues" for the software though.
