If you use external routines programmed in C or Fortran in form of DLMs,
they will have to be recompiled. Call_externals are not affected.

An upgrade to 6.0 doesn't necessarily mean that you'd have to remove
5.4. During transition periods, we will typically have multiple IDL
installs (5.4, 5.5, 6.0) as people migrate up to the next version.
There's no change to the licensing since a license for 6.0 will work on
6.0 or any previous version of IDL.
As for your specific question, the only problem we had around here was
that RSI changed the way arctan worked. Actually it was all of the arc
functions. If memory serves it had something to do with the format of
imaginary numbers.
If you really want to know all the differences, take a look at the
"What's New" manual for IDL 5.5 and IDL 6.0.
