Holger, I often try to refrain from advertising myself too much, but
in this case, you really need to get CMSAVEDIR and CMRESTORE from my
web page.

I spent/wasted too much time on those programs for you to spend/waste
any more time on the problem now.

You can do all the things you asked for, and more. The only real
limitations for saved data are: no restored objects, and no
IDL-compressed save files.
