HI there,
I have been using IDL for about 2 years now (and gotten quite good at
it :-). A week ago I was at a meeting where writing data analysis software
in IDL was discussed - subjects were to create general data analysis
software using widgets as a graphical user interface.
Someone in the meeting claimed that we were wasting our time, and that the
software we wanted to write had already been written for IDL, and was
called PV-WAVE. What he claimed was that PV-WAVE is an overlay for IDL that
will do all this data analysis stuff.
I have had the understanding that PV-WAVE is just a sister of IDL, and that
they were - some years back - the same language, and PV-WAVE is today
nothing other than another programming language. Can anyone enlighten me
here? Am I right, or is he right?
Thanks,
---anders

You're right. There is, I think, a package for IDL called ENVI for
analysing images which could be described as overlay...
