Fascinating, isn't it? For those interested, a Google search on [olympic
medal per capita] brings up some good news results, and there's a great
nations-of-the-world statistics site with maps for this kind of thing
(e.g.: Sports - Olympic medals - Total (Sydney 2000) (per capita)) and
much more:

I tried normalizing the medal count by gross domestic product, but for
Australia I got +Inf. That must be a bug in IDL too.
