The same problem showed up in a linux machine with 24-bit X-server
with "writable" colormaps (that is, directcolor) and was solved by
using a "static" colormap instead (that is, truecolor).
Now, this is just a guess, but in 8-bit, you could try to use
staticcolor instead of the "writable" pseudocolor:
device,static_color=8
help,/device
Not sure if it works, but it might be worth a try...
