i had exactly the same problem where an index is not representative of
a continuous variable and cannot bi triangulated and trigridded...
i don't know if there is a dedicated function in idl , at that time i
built a regular but much finer grid and mapped the irregular grid on
the finer
new grid. (a value in the older grid fills more values in the new one)
