The setup:
I run IDL on a nice fast SGI Challenge in my lab, but do all
of my writing with OzTeX on a PowerMac at home (IMHO
this is much nicer than dvips and Ghostscript under X11).
The problem:
I generate encapsulated postscriptfiles in IDL on the SGI,
transfer the file to the Mac, incorporate the image into a
TeX or LaTeX file and attempt to view the result and/or print
to a non-postscript printer. The attempt fails (both viewing
and printing) because the SGI/IDL file does not contain a
PICT preview in the resource fork of the file. Of course
I can print the dvi file on the nice postscript printer at the lab,
but without the benefit of previews during writing.
The question:
Is this a shortcoming of the IDL implementation of the EPS
device? i.e. can and should RSI include a PICT preview in
the .eps file? Or does this point out a fundamental and
irreconcilable difference between EPS formats under MacOS
and Unix?
RSI people: feel free to email me in response in spite of your
answer to FAQ G10! : )
