The books that David recommends are excellent, I highly
recommend reading them.
In addition you can also check out the "getting started in idl"
manual that comes with idl
(accessible from the help menu, and also the file is
getstart.pdf in the help folder of your idl installation
if you are using windows).

And of course this newsgroup is the best resource!
