Well I have no idea about directly saving images in the SGI RGB
format. What I tend to do id to save images as GIFs, TIFFs or
whatever and then use some nifty graphics conversion routines
from SGIs FTP site. The routines convert many different formats
to and from SGI's format. You can of course "spawn" these routines
from with IDL.
