I just submitted a feature request to RSI to update netCDF support to
the new version (3.6.0).

The main advance is full 64-bit file support.

Adding 64-bit file offsets required a change to the netCDF file format.
The 3.6.0 library is backward compatible with the old file format, but
64-bit files will not be readable with libraries older than 3.6.0. I
think the only interface change needed in IDL to support the new version
would be a 64-bit keyword in the NCDF_CREATE function.

If large file support is important to you, you might want to drop RSI a
note and let them know. ;-)
