Another nice shareware MacOSX editor is SubEthaEdit which you can find at
(http://www.codingmonkeys.de/subethaedit/)
Larry Van Peursem coded up the IDL syntax highlighting mode for it - it's slick.

Emacs should certainly work in a Terminal window.
I prefer a Mac-like point and click editor. As it turns out, the
excellent BBEdit text editor is now available in a free version called
TextWrangler (barebones.com). If you like it, you can upgrade to the
full version, which includes CVS hooks, html formatting, and other
gewgaws that appeal to those that know how to use them (myself not among
them).

Hmmm.. fascinating...

I have been loathe to do this, but if there is no other way, maybe
I'll give it a shot. I'm sure I'll be happy in an Aqua world once I
get used to it.

If I do the same thing from an xterm window, keyboard focus switches to
the graphics window.
Maybe using Terminal instead of an xterm will do what you want?
Terminal windows work differently than xterm windows in other regards
(e.g., copying and pasting), so you may want to experiment.
