Does IDL work in server mode on Windows? This would probably be the simplest
solution if you can achieve it. For more info look in the External
Development Guide in the section Remote Procedure Calls.

If the IDL process requires significant time and you want your GUI to be
responsive during the processing you need to be aware of issues related to
event driven programming and threads.
