My question was probably best phrased in this group by Norbert Hahn more
than 10 years ago (without any replies):

How do I truncate a file without copying the data to another file and
deleting the original ?
I don't have the disk space to hold both copies. OpenU allows to read
and write files but unless I add records the size is not changed.
Thanks for any help

There used to be a VMS keyword TRUNCATE_ON_CLOSE to OPENU that would do
what I want: truncate the file at the current file pointer position when
the file was closed. I'd prefer an OS-independent method.
