I've been wondering. Is there an IDL spreadsheet out there??
I know thats kinda going in the opposite direction, but I have
an app. where it would be useful to view/modify image data points
in a spreadsheet format. Don't really need much else....well...
the ability to say, grab a rectangular area and get an average or
do other stats on it *would be nice*...

Has anyone made an attempt to create such a utility?

believe you are essentially describing the spyglass products,
which sort of work like that. A number of PC based products
work in similar fashion...
