Users of IDLWAVE,
I am attempting to negotiate with RSI to provide some assistance to
help IDLWAVE (see idlwave.org) make full use of the HTML help manuals.
At present, you can download these manuals from idlwave.org, but a
future IDL release may bring an HTML-native help system from RSI.
The issue is that at present I convert the full IDL manuals (>6000
pages) to HTML, and then laboriously scan them for interesting
locations, such as routine reference pages, keyword links, etc. This
is what makes possible the lightening fast, context-sensitive HTML
help many of you have enjoyed using; however, it an increasingly large
burden to bear, which threatens the future of IDLWAVE's help system.
Enlisting RSI's help to index these locations for us would guarantee
the future availability of HTML-based context sensitive help in
IDLWAVE, and make supporting multiple versions of help based on the
user's own version of IDL trivial.
If you use IDLWAVE, and enjoy the context-sensitive help functionality
it provides, I urge you contact RSI, and voice your strong interest in
their support of IDLWAVE's continuing and future use of HTML
documentation:

Thanks,
JD
