For a beginner, the manuals which come with IDL are not the best
material to start with. Again, I recommend either David Fanning's or
Liam Gumley's book. David's is more tutorial-style, Liam's more
reference-style in my opinion. Spend a few days going through the
introductory chapters of one of them (and type the examples yourself!).
Then you should understand the greater picture of how IDL works, and
you'll be able to work out the details from the IDL help system or by
asking specific questions here on the newsgroup.

I do not want to sound rude, but I am starting to wonder whether you are
using the right software package for your purpose. With IDL you WILL HAVE TO
do some programming yourself which requires actually reading some of the
user guides, book and tutorials you were directed to in other posts. If you
are not willing to do this you might want to try Origin, Sigmaplot, Surfer,
IGOR, or any of the other software packages that do not require programming.
Cheers,
Haje
