Temporary variable limit exceeded [message #4476]

I am calling an external C-routine to do some parametric model fitting on
a pixel-wise basis in time-sequence images. After a few hundred estimations,
it says "-- % Temporary variable limit exceeded." Looking in the manual, I
don't see where I could use Temporary function. I am still running 3.6.1
on Sparc 10, 4.1.3.

Is there some way to "clear" temporary variables? Or is it a special problem
with call_external? Or ....?
