Could be, but I couldn't begin to guess whether it is an IDL issue, a graphics
card driver issue, or some layer of Apple software in between.

It's also possible that it is something to do with POLYFILL. I seem to recall
that TVing a blocky image is much faster than drawing the equivalent with
POLYFILL.
