Hi Jeff -
You really can't stop IDL and PV-Wave from crashing MacX v1.2
(currently the latest release). I've used IDL and PV-Wave with MacX,
eXodus and now MachTen.
There are four workarounds that I know of:
1) Downgrade to MacX 1.1.7
2) Sidegrade to eXodus (contact info below)
3) Upgrade to MacX 2.0 when it is released by Apple/Age Logic
4) Install Tenon's MachTen and X packages (contact info below)

I prefer MacX over eXodus, but I know other people who feel just the
opposite. I've passed on the IDL/PV-Wave/MacX bug to the developers of
the new MacX, and assume they will correct it. It's in beta test at the
moment. I don't know if it will be ready in 2 weeks, 2 months, the year
2000...
If you're on a tight budget or running on a PowerMac, eXodus is
probably your best bet, otherwise I highly recommend Tenon's MachTen
and X server packages (Tenon should be native this month or next, and I
suspect MacX will also be native in this timeframe). On my IIfx,
MachTen is much faster than either MacX or eXodus. List price for the
Pro version of MachTen and the X software is $1045, but they have
various discounts and specials throughout the year (especially during
MacWorld conventions). I bought the two Pro and X packages during the
time of the Boston MacWorld last August for $350. Student discounts are
also good. Keep in mind that the price for MachTen delivers a complete
UNIX package for the Mac, not just an X server. Tenon's web site listed
above runs on a Quadra 630 with 8MB RAM.
