Peter,

I wrote a little file selection dialog that has this functionality.
You can find it on the RSI-IDL code repository or find it at the
following web address:

http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/staff/dimeo/idl_programs.html

The program is called RMD_PICKFILE.PRO and I actually wrote it for the
purpose you stated.
