In IDL 3.6.1, in 'xdemo' under the 'Widget Examples' entry, there is a
Slot Machine Demo. This ran okay on IDL for MS Windows, but on our
Suns and DEC Alphas it has the widget convulsions problem - as the
bitmap on the buttons changes, the widget resizes, and takes forever
to redraw. My guess would be a 'bug' in the IDL X widget code. I
haven't installed Unix IDL V4.0 to see if it is fixed there.

IMHO, it is annoying that RSI completely re-does its demo and sample
routines with each release. The widget examples on the xdemo menu
under 3.6.1 seem completely missing in 4.0, and the buggy but
promising 'pwidget' plotting tool made a brief appearance and is now
in the 'obsolete' directory for 4.0. Also annoying is that the only
way to find interesting stuff like the 'pwidget' routine seems to be
to look through the .pro sources in the lib directory tree.
