I also noticed these widget convulsions in IDL v3.6. When I tried
to add a new child widget to an existing parent, IDL did not put it on top
of an existing child, but the parent sort of 'flashed' multiple times
as the new child was added (the child was a multi-line text widget, and IDL
would add the first line, then rebuild the widget to make room for the second
line, add it, rebuild for the third line... well, you get the idea). This
gave a flashing or convulsing effect that was VERY slow. I finally just
manipulated how I built the original parent until the problem disappeared.
