I'm getting the impression that we will no longer be able to
add our help items to the general IDL help under the new 4.0
like we could under 3.6. This is very disheartening. Using
the old help for our stuff and the newer help for everything
else is not acceptable. There *must* be a way...and short of
paying huge royalties to MASTERGRAFX (?) or whatever PC-type
software company built the help. Does anyone know of any
solutions for adding your help? I was hoping the new version
would make things better, not worse...

Here is a response from RSI to one user about the lack of help:

A solution does exist. IDL 4.0 still includes MK_LIBRARY_HELP
(undocumented.) It also still includes the old online help viewer,
WIDGET_OLH (also undocumented.) If the ".help" files created with
MK_LIBRARY_HELP are in the help path (in the "help" subdirectory,
for example) then the call "widget_olh" will display them.
We're looking into better ways for the user to create their
own help files.

I, too, was hoping version 4.0 included improvements, and was disappointed.
The answer, of course, is to badger RSI directly (assuming you're on support)
and make it clear how you feel about this. I've done my share of pestering
and RSI claims that there are plans to make improvements for the next
release. If you feel strongly about this or have suggestions about what
you'd like to see, let them know! They have no obligation to respond to
anything that gets posted here, but they will respond to direct
communication with them (if only to reply that they're taking your thoughts
into consideration.)

I get the impression that none of the developers at RSI have their own
private libraries or non-RSI libraries (why would they?) so they may not
realize how important support for searching and using non-RSI libraries
can be. Let them know!
