We found the same thing. RSI's suggested workaround was "Use global
variables" (!x.tickname, !x.ticks,...). Sure, that works, but it's not
really all that satisfactory.

We have experienced so many problems with IDL 4.0 that we have removed
it and are back to using 3.5.1 until something gets fixed :-(
