A few weeks ago I asked RSI about this documentation.
Here is their response:
RSI will be supplying a supplemental manual and examples for users
of Callable IDL in the future. We wanted to have a complete and
robust set of examples and information regarding this new feature
of IDL 4.0. However, we also wanted to release IDL 4.0 to our users
as soon as possible. The Callable IDL documentation is not yet
available.
It will be interesting to see how useful Callable IDL will be.
I'm hoping that there will be some mechanism for going the other
way too, ie. having IDL be the client talking to a C server.
IMHO CALL_EXTERNAL and pipes are too limited and LINKIMAGE needs
better documentation and examples.
Scott.
