Has anyone tried running IDL 6.2 on Red Hat Enterprise 4? Looks like
the kernel has also been updated which could spell trouble.

6.2 appears to run perfectly ok on RHEL AS4. The current kernel is
2.6.9-11.ELsmp; not quite the lasest, but I don't expect running the latest
will make any difference. This is an Opteron system, and I have tried both the
x86 and x86_64 versions of IDL.
