Thank you Rick,
I think your solution could be the most stable one. However, I am a Mac
novice and still not well trained in shell script writing. As I answered
Marshall, I am experimenting with an alias of localhost. There is also a
proposal of our German supporter to try LM_LICENSE_FILE defined with
1700@localhost. That I will do in near future with the next license
failure.

Karsten

Do you speak Python at home instead of Idl?

Yes,thank you, that has fixed one thing. Unluckily is the chosen hostname
without network not resolved. However I am trying at the moment with an
alias of localhost. This works frequently (!). However I must experience
some difficulties if I have the X-server started and change the
environment. At least I can now mostly use idl.

This seems a bit heavy handed but you can edit the hostname (SERVER) in
your license.dat file.
If you have static addressing, then you could just create 3 files (work,
home, none) and write a little script that renames the license.dat file
appropriately then launches IDL.
The robust solution would be to write a script that inserts your
hostname into the license.dat file and then launches IDL. Probably
quite simple. You could use sed or awk.
Maybe I am missing something. It's been a long time since I dealt with
node locked licenses on UNIX...

You can set the hostname to remain the same in all environments, which will
probably ease your difficulties. Edit the file /etc/hostconfig and change
the line 'HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-', replacing the -AUTOMATIC- with whatever
you want your Mac's hostname to be.

Hmm, ja, may be, but actually I got a single user node locked license,
since I had that on my former (Windows) Laptop. I will ask, thank you for
the hint.
