How hard is it to break into IDL / PV-WAVE consulting? How do you find
work if you don't have the right contacts or knowledge? Does anyone
know any temp agencies near Washington, D.C.., or which cover a wider
area for temporary contracts, that find full or part-time work for
technical jobs?
I think my ideal job would be part-time and have flexible scheduling,
and would allow me to do other work on my own, though those desires may
go out the window, as my current job will end in a few months.
Consulting (or perhaps teaching short courses, though I lack the
credentials) sounds ideal. Given a choice, I'd like to stay away from
hardcore intelligence work, or travel to dangerous places.
(Realistically, it would be hard for a private consultant to get the
clearances anyway.)
I have about 25 Years experience scientific programming for research
and operational use, in the area of Remote sensing, most recently in
polarimetric and interferometric SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), before
that in hyperspectral image processing, and earlier in data compression
and data acquisition and control. Some of my software has flown on air,
ship and space borne platforms. Used IDL and PV-WAVE since about 1984;
have also used Fortran and C a lot, APL, Basic, and some extinct
flavors of assembly, somewhat less. Bacheler's degree in physics. So
I've some of the right buzzwords, but no knowledge of running a
business.
