I have put updates of idl.el and idl-shell.el at the following
locations:

;; ftp://fermi.jhuapl.edu/pub/idl_emacs/idl.el
;; ftp://eos.crseo.ucsb.edu/pub/idl/idl.el

;; ftp://fermi.jhuapl.edu/pub/idl_emacs/idl-shell.el
;; ftp://eos.crseo.ucsb.edu/pub/idl/idl-shell.el

idl-shell.el runs IDL within an emacs buffer. It provides for command
editing and history as well as ".pro" debugging features.

idl.el is an intelligent editing mode used in GNU emacs for your
".pro" files.

The comments at the beginning of each file describe their operations,
installation and customization.

idl-shell.el is at version 2.0. This version is only for use of IDL
version 4.0 and beyond. You need version idl-shell.el 1.20 or earlier
to work with IDL versions before 4.0. Our group has not committed yet
to switching to IDL version 4, so I have not thouroughly checked out
the new idl-shell.el but it appears to work.

IDL version 4 has fixed previous problems IDL had with breakpoints.
This makes idl-shell behave more predicatably. This version of
idl-shell was a quick fix to work with IDL version 4. There are no
new features or bug fixes other than the benefits from the new IDL
version. Eventually I would like to have all set breakpoints
highlighted and improve breakpoint and syntax error tracking. I have
not figured out how to use the new .trace command. idl-shell.el still
needs work, but I find it invaluable.

idl.el is at version 1.22. idl.el can now use font-lock mode and I
put back in the ability to capitalize keywords when indenting a line
or region.

If you have any problems or find bugs please let me know.
