Possibly the build in screencapture:

usage: screencapture [-icmwsWx] [files]
-i capture screen interactively, by selection or window
control key - causes screen shot to go to clipboard
space key - toggle between mouse selection and
window selection modes
escape key - cancels interactive screen shot
-c force screen capture to go to the clipboard
-m only capture the main monitor, undefined if -i is set
-w only allow window selection mode
-s only allow mouse selection mode
-W start interaction in window selection mode
-x do not play sounds
-S in window capture mode, capture the screen not the window
-C capture the cursor as well as the screen. only in non-inte
odes
-t<format> image format to create, default is png
files where to save the screen capture, 1 file per screen

might serve better for this purpose

Mac OS X has a built-in utility called Grab that will do this sort of
thing. It will even capture pulled-down menus.

Hi David,

you can use the 'import' command from ImageMagick
(http://www.imagemagick.org) to create TIFF, JPEG, EPS, ... output:

############################################################ ##############

NAME
import - capture some or all of an X server screen and save the
image to a file.

SYNOPSIS
import [ options ... ] file

DESCRIPTION

Import reads an image from any visible window on an X server and outputs
it as an image file. You can capture a single window, the entire screen,
or any rectangular portion of the screen. Use display for redisplay,
printing, editing, formatting, archiving, image processing, etc. of the
captured image.

The target window can be specified by id, name, or may be selected by
clicking the mouse in the desired window. If you press a button and then
drag, a rectangle will form which expands and contracts as the mouse
moves. To save the portion of the screen defined by the rectangle, just
release the button. The keyboard bell is rung once at the beginning of the
screen capture and twice when it completes.

############################################################ ##############

Also, vnc2swf is a nice utility (http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/vnc2swf):

vnc2swf is a screen recording tool for X-Window (X11), Windows and Mac OS
Desktop. It records the live motion of a screen and generates a Macromedia
Flash(TM) movie (.swf) file.

regards,
lajos
