IDL's tiff_read function does not support compressed TIFF files, however
LZW compression seems to be pretty common with all image processors
(Photoshop, xv, etc.). I would like the general ability to read such files
without the additional step of decompressing first with another program.

Has anyone written an extension to the tiff_read function that interprets
LZW compression? If not, what is a good source for the LZW compression
algorithm and is there a strong reason why it is not already supported or that
I should avoid it?
