I think so, well it references the cleveland et al paper in it's header
and they're the ones who did the netlib loess. My loess journey
started with the netlib code given to me by a work collegue - couldn't
get it to compile on the machines here, old libraries or some such
problem according to the people i asked - so i searched and found the
idl version.

I don't have any experience with the Freudenreich LOESS code, but
I won't let that stop me from commenting!

Do you know if the Freudenreich LOESS code is based on the netlib
loess code? I did not know there was such a beast implemented in
IDL. Something I've been thinking about trying for some time is
making an IDL wrapper for locfit (http://www.locfit.info/), which
I use from R. It is mostly written in C, so it would not be
impossible to use it by making library calls from IDL.
