Hello idlwizard-1,
try creating a file
called .gdlrc in your home directory and then
try gdl again. You can then set your path
and other variables with in the .gdlrc file
as you would in your .idlrc file.

;gdlrc file
!PATH=!PATH+'~/idl_code'
print,'Code library included'
