If you're using ENVI and you're interested in getting context for an
image with map info, try this user function:
http://michaelgalloy.com/?p=3
It adds a "Find location using Google Maps" in the Tools menu of the
display window for any image with map information. Selecting it will
bring up the location of the image with Google Maps in your default browser.

It has similar functionality. The advantages are:
1. The boundary of the image is marked on the map.
2. The image takes up the entire browser window and resizes with it.

Is this an update to the routine Thomas Harris posted a routine to the
User-Contributed Library on RSI's website in October of last year, or
does it do something differently?

This is an preference of your browser. In Firefox, there is a "Open
links from other applications in:" option which I've set to "a new tab
in the most recent window". My other choices would be: "a new window" or
"the most recent tab/window". Your choices are determined by your
browser and how much control it lets you have.

why not putting the option to open the webpage in a new browser window?

I'm glad it's useful. I upgraded to Version 2 of the Google Maps API
today. This doesn't require any new IDL/ENVI code, but things look
slightly different on the webpage. The main enhancement being higher
resolution imagery and an overview window in the lower-right hand corner
of the map.
