I really thought this question had died and gone to heaven.
I am *so* glad to have it back! It makes me feel so useful
I've decided to come out of retirement to answer it:

Device, DECOMPOSED=0

Or, more usefully, get a better image display routine
(e.g., IMGDISP, TVIMAGE, PLOTIMAGE, etc.) :-)
