I use 6.1 on windows with >2GB files. I used to see this problem on
some Solaris machines.

If you have access to a linux system try
man split

and do invoke a spawn process from idl

The only way I know is to run IDL on a 64-bit OS (IRIX, Solaris, HP-UX, ...).
